The man from Portrush, Northern Ireland started playing, at Rathmore Golf Club when he was eight years old. In his early teens he played senior cup for Rathmore. McDowell attended the University of Alabama from 1998 to 2002. In his final year he won the Haskins Award for the most outstanding collegiate golfer in the US. In both Ireland and the US McDowell had a successful amateur career; he represented Ireland internationally and was a member of the Walker Cup team in 2001.

In 2010 McDowell became the first Northern Ireland golfer to win the US Open and the first European since 1970. Later that year he clichéd the winning putt for Europe in the Ryder cup victory at Celtic Manor. Then finished an amazing year with a win at Valderrama and was voted joint European Tour Golfer of the Year alongside Martin Kaymer.

In 2011 McDowell was consistently in the top 15 of the World rankings.

 2011: 3rd, Hyundai Tournament of Champions;  T1, Tavistock Cup; T14 US Open, 3rd Alfred Dunhill Links Championship,  3rd WGC-HSBC Champions. Finished the year at Dubai World Championship with an 11th place.
